What is a roof deck? Under your shingles are wood boards that make up the surface of your roof. These sheets of plywood are usually 4 feet by 8 feet and vary in thickness. The most common are 3/8th of an inch thick and 1/2 of an inch thick.
If roof damage is left unattended for long periods of time, water will get under the shingles and eventually seep into the wood boards, thus making the wood boards water logged. When repairing or replacing a roof with new shingles, the water logged wood boards must be removed and replaced. If waterlogged wood boards are left unattended even longer, it will form into mold growth which will eventually lead into the attic and spread further into your house. this applied to both residential and commercial roofing. During a shingle roof replacement, most times we wont know if there is water damage until the old shingles are removed - Unless the surface of the old roof is visibly bending or sagging.
